Some innovative Microsoft products: it's hip to be square

Even geeks are not above herd mentality. Everybody loves Twitter, Apple & Google.
Everybody likes to bash Microsoft. Microsoft is always too late, too monopolistic, too expensive, too square...Yaddie yaddie da....

Anyway, because I now manage the Microsoft Belgium account at McCann Erickson,
I thought it to be a good idea for McCann to check out the latest Microsoft products.
And we found out it's hip to be square.

The day before our visit, Microsoft had announced to cut some 5000 jobs worldwide. Thankfully, the Belgian office was largely spared so the mood was actually quite upbeat. We got a nice welcome at their Zaventem office by my client & some professional evangelisers. Evangelisers as I understood it are a mix of community managers, tech experts & seeders.

The first demo we got was of the  Microsoft Surface table. It's a great new user interface,
very intuitive and just plain fun to work on. At a current price of 12k euro's, it's not going to
be in everybody's living room soon, but it's definitely one to watch. IThe Surface has a lot marketing potential, especially for client demo's or fot showroom/point of sales applications.
I know what I want for next Christmas anyway.

I was already aware of SIlverlight, which was showcased in thisHard Rock cafe memorabilia demo. But I was told for the first time that Ajax is actually a Microsoft technology. So you CAN be a Fortune 500 company and modest!

We finally got a view of Photosynth, which I'd describe Flickr on drugs. Basically, you can store pics online, which will get compared with other pics. If enough pixels of one pic match the other pic, they'll get combined in a same frame.  Have a look at this Obama rally to see what it's all about. Great creative applications for showcasing buildings, events,  products and so on... Also nice to think about making a "where's Waldo" game with this.

We never got to discuss Windows 7 (which unusually for Microsoft appeared in a free beta) or LiveMesh but for me and the other people at McCann, one thing was clear.
We'd like another appointment to play with that Surface table.
And Microsoft is serious about innovation.
